Clinic with Misty May

By Misty May-Treanor

Setting remains the most unglamorous part of beach volleyball. Everybody likes to get served and swing away, but you’d better learn to set your partner consistently or you’ll never get a chance to hit. Here are five things I focus on when I’m setting:

1. Get there with your feet in time to use your hands.

2. Make sure your hands are up early, and never go in with the intention of bump setting unless conditions dictate that.

3. Lift with your legs, and follow through to the target.

4. Once you set, look at the opponent’s side of the court immediately so you
can make a good call for your partner. Hitters may see that the line is open, but they want reassurance.

5. Immediately after you make a call, become a defender. It’s important to cover your partner. Even the great ones like Kerri Walsh get blocked now and then.
